ACCUC Statement on the Passing of Pope Francis (1936-2025)

The Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities in Canada (ACCUC) joins with Catholics and men and women of all faiths, as well as all people of goodwill, to mourn the passing of Pope Francis. He was a leader with a deep compassion for the poor and marginalized, a courageous love of the Creation gifted to us, and a clear voice in matters of justice and conscience. He combined traditional values with new realities and sensibilities while remaining faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

For twelve years, we were blessed by his wisdom and pastoral care, inspired and shaped by the teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola. He saw hope-filled pathways to travel, never discouraged by problems, never surrendering to obstacles. He showed us how to forgive and reconcile. For the Church, he was a courageous reformer. He was humble enough to admit mistakes. He walked with us and Indigenous Peoples on a Penitential Pilgrimage. We have lost an inspiring and tireless advocate for transparency and shared responsibility. He will be deeply missed in the days and years ahead. May he see our Creator God face-to-face.
